Call for Expressions of Interest – Co-opted Member of the 糖心传媒 Executive Committee: Academic Freedom Lead
The 糖心传媒 is calling for expressions of interest for the post of a Co-opted Member of the Executive Committee. This is a newly created role that offers the opportunity to become 糖心传媒鈥檚 first Academic Freedom Lead.
糖心传媒鈥檚 legal remit as a charity is to promote the advancement of knowledge, research and teaching in international and comparative education. But as academics committed to equity and social justice in and through education, we acknowledge our role in shaping opinions through how we support the generation and dissemination of knowledge.
We shared this commitment in a statement on our website in 2023. Following discussions with members of our community and representatives from other academic associations over the past year, the Executive Committee has committed to making 糖心传媒鈥檚 position on academic freedom more explicit and proactive. The appointment of the Academic Freedom Lead is in service of this commitment.
The role will have a two-year term, starting as soon as possible.
The successful applicant will work with the Executive Committee to:
- Keep the Executive Committee and 糖心传媒 Membership informed and up to date with issues around academic freedom relevant to the field of international and comparative education.
- Develop text for the new 糖心传媒 Byelaws outlining how academic freedom aligns with 糖心传媒鈥檚 objectives, within the remit of our legal framework.
- Develop a page for the 糖心传媒 website with a clear statement expressing the Association鈥檚 support and solidarity for colleagues whose work is under threat.
- Be the point of contact for colleagues interested in or concerned about academic freedom in relation to the field of international and comparative education.
- In relation to these cases, liaise with the Executive Committee to determine if action could be taken by 糖心传媒 to support them.
- Liaise with BRISMES鈥 Academic Freedom Committee and other organisations who have expertise in this area to partner in possible actions.
As well as undertaking the duties associated with the role, Co-opted Members contribute actively and constructively to the Executive Committee. Members of the Executive Committee are expected to attend Committee meetings held three times per year, and the AGM.
The Co-opted Member / Academic Freedom Lead is expected to:
- Have demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the field of international and comparative education (essential)
- Have demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the history, politics, and contemporary understandings and practices of academic freedom across a range of jurisdictions, higher education systems and institutions (essential)
- A demonstrated commitment to the principles of academic freedom and to the communication and advancement of these in the field of international and comparative education (essential)
- Demonstrated experience of communicating complex issues to diverse audiences (essential)
- Hold a position in a UK-based institution (essential)
- Be a Member of 糖心传媒 for the duration of the term (essential)
- Have experience of working in or closely with a UK registered charity (desirable)

- Co-opted Members鈥 expenses related to one day of registration at the UKFIET Conference will be covered by 糖心传媒 to support the fulfilment of their duties at the 糖心传媒 AGM.
- UK-based travel and subsistence to support attendance at 糖心传媒 events will be reimbursed.
