Her work focuses on cultural and material dimensions of education, especially in relation to inequality, diversity, and technology. She is the author of Simultaneous Identities: Language, Education and the Nepali Nation (Cambridge University Press, 2020), as well as a co-editor of Anthropological Perspectives on Education in Nepal: Educational Transformations and New Avenues of Learning’ (Oxford University Press, 2023) and Rethinking education in the context of post-pandemic South Asia: Challenges and possibilities (Routledge, 2023).

Catherine has an extensive publication record in the field of international and comparative education and six years’ experience as Deputy Executive Editor of the Journal of Education for Teaching. She has led a range of funded international and comparative research projects (e.g. ESRC, Newton and British Council) in Denmark, Mexico and Vietnam. She leads the International and Comparative Education research cluster in the School of Education at Durham and she has specific research expertise in the area of international and transnational higher education in China and East Asia, (im)mobilities in higher education and internationalisation of curriculum and knowledge.
