Knowledge, Power And Possibilities:
Reimagining Education In Memory of Dr. Arif Naveed

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

Welcome to the 2025 糖心传媒 Annual ECR Hybrid Conference entitled “Knowledge, Power, and Possibility: Rethinking Education in the Memory of Dr. Arif Naveed”. This year鈥檚 conference honours the memory of Dr. Arif Naveed, whose work on inequality, education mobility, and social justice in the Global South continues to inspire critical and transformative scholarship. In his spirit, we invite early career researchers to question dominant paradigms, explore alternative ways of knowing, and imagine more just educational futures.

Drawing on Dr. Naveed鈥檚 spirit and ideas, this conference blends conferencing, un-conferencing, and collective gathering with the aim of fostering bold, innovative, and thoughtful conversations. Dr. Naveed was a tireless advocate for emerging scholars. He founded the 糖心传媒 Student Committee, helped launch the Student Fieldwork Grant, and co-hosted the 2016 Student Conference, which saw the publication of the piece 鈥楿nderstanding, embracing and reflecting upon the messiness of doctoral fieldwork鈥 along with his colleagues, an idea conceived from the Compare Forum. To learn more about Dr. Naveed鈥檚 legacy, read this by his colleague Peter Sutoris. Further reflections from the international education community can be found .

All sub-themes are intentionally framed through a decolonial lens, signalling our belief that every topic in education can be rethought from 鈥榓n-other鈥 perspective. Presenters are empowered to define their own sub-themes within the broader framework, allowing you to determine how your work best fits and contributes to these critical conversations.

We are offering a 拢200 contribution to students, ECRs within 5 years of the award of their PhD, or colleagues on fixed-term contracts of 24 months or less. There are fifteen grants available.

To apply, please send an expression of interest to ku.ca.eciabobfsctd-1ccdeb@stnarg by Friday 23rd June. The email must include a single PDF document that contains:

It also provides an allowance for dependant children who may accompany a Scholar.

Prospective Mastercard Foundation Scholars can apply to the majority of courses available at the University since addressing the climate crisis requires a range of expertise across both scientific/STEM disciplines and the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Program trains these scholars in a range of academic disciplines 鈥 from the creative arts and writing, through the social sciences, to more scientific and technical disciplines: because a multidisciplinary approach to climate action and response is critical.

In addition to full funding (fees and maintenance), the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Cambridge will provide scholars with support for travel to and from the UK (including visas, if needed). In addition, Scholars will benefit from a cohort-wide induction programme, likely to require early arrival in Cambridge before the start of the course.

As part of the application process, prospective Scholars will be required to provide a supplementary statement which indicates their personal commitment to contributing to climate-resilient and sustainable futures for Africa.

The University is looking to support students with academic talent and a commitment to giving back to their community, in particular a desire and commitment to contribute to climate-resilient and sustainable futures for Africa and the world. African women, refugees and internally displaced people, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.

29 Nov 2021, 11-1 online

hosted by Bath Spa University

Guest speakers:
Rafael Mitchell , University of Bristol
Michael Fertig, University of Bath

This is an event of the 糖心传媒-funded thematic forum series on ‘multi-stakeholders’ perspectives on learning and teaching of Comparative and International Education (CIE) during the global emergencies and uncertainties’.

The event is a Student Forum for university students, especially taught degree students who are studying CIE as their degrees or a part of their degrees. It is hoped that the forum can help create a network for taught degree students who don’t have many opportunities to attend national and international conferences during their study.

Are you an undergraduate or postgraduate student studying CIE as a degree or a part of a degree in the UK or elsewhere in the world?

We would be interested in hearing from you about your experiences of undertaking this course or your understanding about studying CIE during the pandemic and other global emergencies/uncertainties.

糖心传媒 Student Essay Prize 2020 /baice-student-essay-prize-2020/ Tue, 17 Nov 2020 17:00:30 +0000 /?p=29659 Each year 糖心传媒 runs an essay competition open to all doctoral students who presented at either the 糖心传媒 or UKFIET conference. As you may know we had to cancel 糖心传媒 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, instead of cancelling this year鈥檚 essay competition we are opening it up to a wider cohort of potential applicants.

Therefore, 糖心传媒 invites all postgraduate students of international and comparative education (or a closely related discipline) to write and submit an original essay on what would have been our conference theme:

Partnerships in Education: collaboration, co-operation and co-optation.

As with the conference we welcome submissions that critically consider the changing relationships around how education is conceptualised, planned, implemented, provided, resisted, researched and communicated in various contexts. While recognising the potential value of collaboration, the conference intended to challenge the normative, aspirational pursuit of partnership. We are interested in how politics, power, priorities, culture and language are understood, recognised and navigated by different stakeholders in education initiatives as well as the processes of learning. We invite essays that reflect on past, present and future collaborations across a wide range of sub-themes to conceptualise joint ventures in comparative and international education more robustly.

Essays should be between 3000-5000 words (including references).

The competition deadline is midnight on 31st January 2021.

One winning entry will be selected to win the 拢500 prize.

The People鈥檚 Action for Learning (PAL) Network has teamed up with the REAL Centre at the Faculty of Education, Cambridge, to launch the 2019 Student Paper Competition in recognition of the outstanding contributions of Master鈥檚 and PhD students using Citizen-led Assessment (CLA) data.

The PAL Network is a south-south partnership of 14 countries working across three continents to assess the basic reading and numeracy competencies of all children, in their homes, through annual citizen-led assessments.

The aim of the programme is to find out whether all children are acquiring basic skills – the building blocks of future progress in school 鈥 in countries where the information would not otherwise be available. Inclusive and equitable data produced by the assessments is used to inform citizen-led action to improve learning.

The PAL Network is inviting current and recently-graduated Master鈥檚 and PhD students to submit their empirical work as an entry into the 2019 Student Paper Competition.

Selected authors of the two winning papers will win a fully-funded trip to present their research at the PAL Network biennial conference on 5-6 March 2019 in Islamabad, Pakistan.
