There is a long history of collaboration between ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ and UKFIET, and we value the opportunities the UKFIET conference provides for facilitating connections, collaboration and collegiality between the two organisations.

Therefore, while our standard conference bursary scheme has now closed for 2023, we have launched an additional scheme to support attendance at UKFIET. We are offering a £200 contribution to students, ECRs within 5 years of the award of their PhD, or colleagues on fixed-term contracts of 24 months or less. There are fifteen grants available.

To apply, please send an expression of interest to ku.ca.eciabobfsctd-812bba@stnarg by Friday 23rd June. The email must include a single PDF document that contains:

  1. Confirmation that you have had an abstract accepted at UKFIET 2023.
  2. Confirmation from a supervisor or line manager that you meet at least one of the criteria (you are a registered student; you are within 5 years of your PhD; you are on a fixed term contract of <24 months)
  3. Confirmation from a supervisor or line manager that you have not received grant or institutional funding to attend UKFIET that covers more than 50% of the total cost of attendance (taking into account registration, accommodation, reasonable subsistence and economy travel). Please provide an indicative budget for your attendance at UKFIET.

University of Cambridge Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program for African Students /university-of-cambridge-mastercard-foundation-scholars-program-for-african-students/ Wed, 16 Nov 2022 15:53:28 +0000 /?p=35062 The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Cambridge is designed to provide talented students from economically marginalised and hard-to-reach communities in Africa with fully-funded opportunities to complete their Master’s training, grow in transformative leadership, and contribute to climate resilience and sustainability in Africa. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program covers the cost of travel and visas, accommodation, meals, allowance for a laptop, health cover, and a living stipend – as well as tuition costs. It also provides an allowance for dependant children who may accompany a Scholar.

Prospective Mastercard Foundation Scholars can apply to the majority of courses available at the University since addressing the climate crisis requires a range of expertise across both scientific/STEM disciplines and the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Program trains these scholars in a range of academic disciplines – from the creative arts and writing, through the social sciences, to more scientific and technical disciplines: because a multidisciplinary approach to climate action and response is critical.

In addition to full funding (fees and maintenance), the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Cambridge will provide scholars with support for travel to and from the UK (including visas, if needed). In addition, Scholars will benefit from a cohort-wide induction programme, likely to require early arrival in Cambridge before the start of the course.

As part of the application process, prospective Scholars will be required to provide a supplementary statement which indicates their personal commitment to contributing to climate-resilient and sustainable futures for Africa.

The University is looking to support students with academic talent and a commitment to giving back to their community, in particular a desire and commitment to contribute to climate-resilient and sustainable futures for Africa and the world. African women, refugees and internally displaced people, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.

Application deadline :Ìý 1 December 2022 or 5 Jan 2023 depending on course of study.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Awards 2020: Our statement on researching international and comparative education during a global pandemic /baice-awards-2020-our-statement-on-researching-international-and-comparative-education-during-a-global-pandemic/ Sat, 25 Apr 2020 13:08:25 +0000 /?p=28843 With the outbreak and spread of Covid-19, many things in our lives have changed. In academia things we took for granted – events and deadlines that gave our professional lives structure and focus – have been swept away or put on hold. Others have taken on new shapes and new meanings, and there are new opportunities too.

At ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ we are aware of the proliferation of new research funding targeted around the crisis. We recognise the need to be proactive and responsive, but we also believe that the best educational research is not rushed. We are interested in and engaged with research that is dealing with urgent matters related to the outbreak, but we also want to create spaces for stepping back and thinking about the bigger picture of international and comparative education research in, and for, our changed and changing world.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½’s main grants and awards programme include the Seedcorn Grant, the Research Capacity and Networking Grant and the Thematic Forum Grant. We welcome applications that were conceptualised before the pandemic. We recognise that a majority of the issues at the heart of these applications will still be relevant once the pandemic is over, although the revised deadline will give applicants an opportunity to amend their proposals (e.g. logistically and methodologically) where necessary.

However, this year, we also encourage applicants to consider pertinent issues related to the current global crisis, and how international and comparative educational research can be conducted creatively, critically, and ethically at this time.

  • How can research balance global and local priorities for education?
  • How can we connect and collaborate without travelling?
  • How can we generate data without putting researchers and participants at risk?
  • What educational innovations and methodological approaches can be developed and tested to mitigate the challenges created by health emergencies?
  • What issues around ethics come into new, or sharper focus, as we engage in educational research amidst a global health emergency?

Applications may include (but are not limited to) reviews, retrospectives, empirical or exploratory work.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ is keen to support a wide range of ideas, therefore we will be doubling the number of grants awarded in 2020.

The revised deadline for all of the above awards is Monday 15th June 2020.

Our Student Fieldwork Grant will be operating as usual, but with a revised deadline of Monday 15th June 2020 to account for recent disruptions and revisions to students’ plans.

Our Student Essay Prize is going to remain open, despite the cancellation of ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2020. All student members of ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ are eligible to submit an essay aligned with the theme of partnerships in international education. The deadline for this award is January 31st 2021.

Students awarded funding for fieldwork in inaugural round of ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Student Travel Bursary Scheme /students-awarded-funding-for-fieldwork-in-inaugural-round-of-baice-student-travel-bursary-scheme/ Thu, 14 Apr 2016 11:27:54 +0000 /?p=3141 ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ are delighted to announce that Jing Kun Bai, Sayaka Hashimoto and Nozomi Sakata, all from the Institute of Education, UCL, have each been awarded a £2500 contribution towards their doctoral fieldwork expenses in the inaugural round of the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Student Travel Bursary Scheme. Their proposals described well-organised, realistically costed studies with clear objectives and research questions and a clear articulation of how their research aligned with the remit of ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½.

Jing Kun Bai: Citizenship education in China: an analysis of the university textbooks of a compulsory ‘Politics’ course. What does this tell us about possible development towards democracy in China?Ìý

ÌýJing Kun is using the bursary to supplement her textbook analysis and undertake classroom observations and interviews in Chinese higher education institutions. She is assessing whether democratic values of critical thinking, multi-culturalism, pluralism and tolerance are being encouraged. Her research is focusing on traces of democratisation which have emerged in the context of economic growth and the one-party political system in China’s reform era as well as the possibilities for democratisation which may emerge in the future.

Ìý

Sayaka Hashimoto: Local government involvement in education for ethnic minority children in post World War II Japan

Sayaka’s fieldwork is based across four areas of Japan and is exploring how education reforms aim to cater for diversity, particularly in relation to migration and ethnic minorities. She is focusing on Japan’s distinctive bottom-up policy development process, the conditions under which these policies are initiated and the ways in which these locally-driven policies are taken up at the national level.

Nozomi Sakata: Learner-centred pedagogy (LCP) in Tanzanian primary schools: mixed methods vertical case study to investigate LCP implementation and its effects on pupils

Nozomi’s PhD is exploring how Tanzania is implementing LCP in primary schools through a lens focusing on national historical and ideological contexts. Her fieldwork took place in Tanzania at the end of 2015. She distributed questionnaires, and conducted lesson observations, interviews and focus groups with teachers and pupils in 13 public and private primary schools in two regions. She also visited the hometown of Tanzania’s first president Julius Nyerere to explore his influence on educational priorities.

Over the coming months, the award winners will submit a report to ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ on their fieldwork, and highlights of these reports will be available on the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ website.

The deadline for the second round of funding for ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Student Travel Bursaries is May 1st 2016. More information is available on the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ website. Please share widely!
