Ibali Network Research Project – Vacancies for Ethnographers /ibali-network-vacancies-for-part-time-ethnographers/ Tue, 11 Jan 2022 15:55:44 +0000 /?p=30554 2x Part-time ethnographer roles on an exciting, innovative research project

The Ibali Network is a collective of researchers from the UK, Nigeria and South Africa. In January we began a two-year UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded study with the title: Ibali: storying new discourses of educational inclusion/exclusion in the UK, Nigeria and South Africa. The research is focusing on the commonalities and differences of how inclusion and exclusion are experienced across education systems in these three countries.

We are looking for two part-time ethnographers to join our team: one who is based in and who has undertaken their education and academic training primarily in the UK, and one who is based in and has undertaken their education and academic training primarily in Nigeria (they will join our South African ethnographer who co-wrote the grant).

women collaborating

About the study

There are three strands to the research:

  • a digital storytelling approach to generate new discourses around inclusion and exclusion in the three contexts;
  • a critical, ethnographic evaluation of the storytelling research process to explore how storytelling could be better and more ethically used in research and;
  • a storytelling research knowledge exchange Hub.

Work on the research will be highly collaborative (across the entire time) and creative (involving methodological experimentation and innovation). The ethnographers will collectively be responsible for a multi-perspective ethnography which will generate continuous data across the storytelling strand. The ethnographers will deploy an overarching set of data-generation processes with individual innovations. They will commit to a set of methods to ensure consistency with the comparative nature of the study, but will locate these methods within guidelines, predominant practices and contemporary ideas from their respective countries. Once the methodology is established, they will individually and collaboratively document and analyse the storytelling workshops and events through three geo-politically distinct lenses.

While the ethnographic strand is separate, we envisage the ethnographic and storytelling teams working in close collaboration across the two years. We do not consider this to be an authoethnography, but an iterative, critically reflective and dialogical study. We know stories can be used to support local and policy change. However, this process and the challenges and tensions involved are not fully understood. A key argument emerging from Ibali is that storytelling research requires closer scrutiny and documentation to interrogate how it can contribute to knowledge generation and its potential for engaging wider publics.

While the study was designed with international travel, we may have to reconsider the approach when we have a better idea of what is possible and safe during the fieldwork phase.

About the role

There will be approximately 96 days work across two years. The role will involve working with the other ethnographers and core team to develop an ethnographic strategy which will involve attending and documenting storytelling workshops and events, creatively generating data with storytelling facilitators, participants and audiences, analysing the ethnographic data, contributing to the publications strategy and co-authoring outputs.

The storytelling approach is participatory and to research such a process might require the ethnographers to find ways of participating too. This will enable the ethnographers to experience the creative outlets participants tap into, although their role will be distinct from the facilitators.

While some team meetings, workshops and events will involve some intensive periods of time-commitment (either face-to-face or virtual, pandemic depending), in general the role will entail a few hours of commitment per week which can be fulfilled remotely.

There is a daily-rate of reimbursement for the work, and travel expenses and related costs will be covered by the project.

About the person

The role will suit someone who is passionate about education, creative research methods and inclusion. We would prefer applicants with a postgraduate degree in a related field and with experience of using ethnographic methods. While you do not need to have prior experience with storytelling, you need to be open to learning new methods, and curious about improving your own research. You should also be able to work in a collaborative way.

As set out above, there are two roles available: one for someone who is based in and who has undertaken their education and academic training primarily in the UK, and one who is based in and has undertaken their education and academic training primarily in Nigeria.

You will need a reliable internet connection to enable you to attend online meetings and workshops.

You will have a desire to undertake international travel (providing it is safe to do so).

You will have a commitment to team-working and to collectively challenging normative research processes in a constructive way that is respectful of difference and diversity.

How to Apply

Please send your CV and a cover letter (each not exceeding two-pages) to Dr Jennifer Agbaire (ku.ca.nepoobfsctd-335965@eriabga.refinnej) by 11.59pm GMT on Monday, January 31st, 2022.

You may also get in touch with聽 any informal questions about the role聽 in advance of your application.

Research Associate Vacancy at University of Bristol – School of Education /research-associate-vacancy-at-university-of-bristol-school-of-education/ Thu, 20 May 2021 09:32:33 +0000 /?p=30059 Bristol University LogoThe School of Education at the University of Bristol is calling for applicants to a Research Associate position.

This is a 6 month fixed term contract to work on the project Evaluating Language Supportive Approaches to Transition at Scale (ELSATS), funded by the British Council. The project evaluates the potential of Language Supportive Pedagogy (LSP) to strengthen subject learning at scale in Tanzania and to be adapted for another country, Ethiopia, where English Medium Instruction starts at lower secondary. In its first seven months, the project will establish the theoretical and evidential basis for the LSP approach. During the same period, curriculum analysis will be conducted on the Tanzanian curriculum documents to establish the changes to curriculum design and learning materials development that a scale-up of LSP would demand. At the classroom level, the research will identify the knowledge needs of teachers through observing how LSP is being implemented across diverse sociolinguistic contexts within Tanzania and with what benefits for subject learning. The project is a collaboration with the University of Dodoma, Tanzania, and Kotebe Metropolitan University, Ethiopia.

The RA’s main role will be to develop a literature review addressed to the question, ‘What is the existing evidence that language supportive pedagogies and other bi/multilingual approaches can strengthen subject learning across transitions in language of instruction in sub-Saharan Africa?’ As well as conducting literature searches and contributing original writing for the review, the RA will be incorporating contributions across the team, who will also provide ideas for the intellectual direction of the literature review and suggest resources. A second strand of work will focus on analysis of curriculum materials in order to compare the language demand of the lower secondary science with the competencies targeted in the upper primary and lower secondary English curriculum. Findings will be shared with organisations responsible for curriculum development and textbook publishers in Tanzania. This analysis is also expected to produce lists of subject specialist vocabulary used in the science curriculum. The list will be used in the design of vocabulary assessment in the school-based component of the research. The literature review is expected to lead to a conference paper and co-authored journal article and the curriculum analysis either to an academic book chapter or co-authored journal article. Up to 20% of the time will be spent supporting the PI with coordinating the team through scheduling online meetings, managing a shared online filestore, sharing meeting recordings with the team (as poor connectivity can interrupt participation for partners in Africa) and occasionally taking notes from meetings.

You have a PhD or are close to completing a PhD in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics or education and development, with expertise in language in education. You should have an appreciation of the academic and international policy debates related to the use of European languages, particularly English, for learning and teaching in basic education in under-resourced contexts and a working understanding of the language competencies required for subject learning in secondary education. We are looking for someone who has experience of conducting academic literature view and has previous authored or co-authored academic writing of publishable quality. An, interest of pedagogic approaches to bi/multilingual education is desirable.

Midlands Graduate School Doctoral Training Partnership – University of Birmingham and Save the Children /esrc-dtp-collaborative-studentship/ Fri, 14 Feb 2020 15:19:54 +0000 /?p=28563 ESRC DTP Collaborative Studentship: How can private schools in India provide inclusive education to disadvantaged and marginalized children?
Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Birmingham
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students
Hours: Full Time, Part Time
Deadline: 2nd March 2020

The Midlands Graduate School is an accredited Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). One of 14 such partnerships in the UK, the Midlands Graduate School is a collaboration between the University of Warwick, Aston University, University of Birmingham, University of Leicester, Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham.

The University of Birmingham as part of Midlands Graduate School is now inviting applications for an ESRC Doctoral Studentship in association with our collaborative partner Save the Children to commence in October 2020.

This exciting new project builds on existing collaborative research and policy work between the University of Birmingham鈥檚 School of Education and Save the Children. Research undertaken within the School of Education has informed Save the Children鈥檚聽Global Policy Position on User Fees in Education and Private Schools聽(2016), and ongoing research is informing the implementation of this global policy at the local level.

In the Indian context, little is known about how private schools attempt to include disadvantaged and marginalized children under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. Through case study and participatory action research, this project will investigate how inclusion is practised and experienced in such non-state school settings. This will involve generating new knowledge and approaches to how we think about inclusion in non-state schools in relation to multiple forms of disadvantage. The project鈥檚 findings will support Save the Children鈥檚 policy and advocacy work in both non-state provision and inclusive quality education and has potential for wider policy impacts.

This is a unique opportunity for a highly-motivated and self-driven individual to collaborate with experienced researchers at the University of Birmingham鈥檚 School of Education and Save the Children on a funded PhD.

Applicants must have a minimum of a good undergraduate degree (2.1 or higher) in a relevant subject, such as education and/or international development and we welcome applicants with a higher degree in a relevant discipline. Social research training is desirable but not essential as this can be provided as part of the studentship. The award may be made on a 1+3/3.5/+3 basis dependent on prior education and research methods training. We encourage applicants with relevant work or volunteering experience; please include details of these in your personal statement.聽 Applicants must be willing and able to spend extended periods of time in India in a range of locations (urban, peri-urban, rural) supported by Save the Children and in the London office.

Application Process

To be considered for this PhD, please complete the Collaborative Studentship application form聽聽and email this along with a CV and covering letter to Gemma Braidley, email:聽ku.ca.mahb.stcatnocobfsctd-4887bc@seiriuqne-noitacudergp. Shortlisted applicants will also be required to provide two references.

Application deadline: Monday 2nd聽March 2020

Midlands Graduate School ESRC DTP
