At a time of mounting global uncertainty and deepening divides in academia, the conference will make explicit efforts to provide space for diverse voices, including civil society organisations, schools and youth groups in Scotland, to join academic debates on global citizenship, development, academic freedom, and decolonisation and their specific relevance to the field of comparative and international education. Panels and plenaries will be intentionally designed to centre and support diverse perspectives, challenging the conventional formats of academic conferences.

Glasgow, with its dynamic GLACIER (Glasgow Comparative and International Education Research) network and thriving community of CIE scholars offers a strong institutional base and a vibrant scholarly environment for this gathering.

In the coming months, we will share more conference updates and details through our newsletters and emails, including the opportunity to join the conference committee.

We look forward to welcoming you to Scotland.

Call for Expressions of Interest to host the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conference 2026 /call-for-expressions-of-interest-to-host-the-baice-conference-2026/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 16:43:06 +0000 /?p=43672 The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ is excited to open the call for expressions of interest (EOI) from colleagues in the field of international and comparative education, who would be interested in hosting the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conference 2026.

The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conference is held every two years, in September. It attracts around 300 colleagues. It is traditionally three days, preceded by a day of pre-conference events specifically for the ECR community. The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conference can be held at any higher education institution in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conference committee is made up of colleagues from the host institution, colleagues from the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Executive Committee, and additional colleagues from the field, where appropriate (to be recruited following the formation of the committee). There are traditionally two conference Chairs with at least one being based at the host institution.

If you are interested in hosting ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2026 you are invited to share a short EOI of up to 500 words with:

  • Your proposed theme and some suggested sub-themes
  • Justification for the geographical location of the conference
  • The names of colleagues (approx. 3-5) involved in the proposal (you can indicate a proposed conference chair although this is not essential at this point)
  • Confirmation that you have had initial conversations with your institution about hosting ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2026, and that they are in support of the EOI
  • Any additional relevant information (see ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ commitments below)

Please note that the EOI is an opportunity to share your initial ideas with the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Executive Committee and we appreciate that at this point they will be in draft format.

While we enthusiastically welcome new ideas for the conference, ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ has a series of commitments that underpin our conference planning, which we expect hosts to honour. These include:

  • Considerable efforts to keep registration costs low
  • Efforts to challenge hierarchical academic norms
  • An emphasis on inclusion and accessibility in relation to all aspects of organising and hosting
  • Creative ideas for inspiring dialogical learning and shifting traditional conference formats (while keeping inclusion/access in mind)
  • Efforts to connect conference activities with local communities and relevant interest groups / supporting local businesses where possible.

Please note that ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ has a fantastic conference support team, whose extensive skill-set can be drawn on as required, creating a tailored support package that aligns with institutional administrative support. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conferences are non-profit, and all surplus funds are re-invested into conference accessibility and engagement (or ring-fenced as seed-funding for future events). While the successful conference committee will lead on the development of the budget, we will provide support with this. As a result, there is no need to submit a budget with the EOI, although if there are any key financial issues that might affect your institution hosting the conference, please let us know in the EOI.

Please email your EOI to Alison Buckler, ku.ca.eciabobfsctd-60727f@riahc, by Friday 28 February 2025.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conference 2024

University of Sussex

3 – 5 September

The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ is recruiting sub-theme co-convenors for the Conference Committee for ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2024. The conference will be held at the University of Sussex between 3– 5 September 2024 and is hosted by the Centre for International Education (CIE). The overarching theme of the conference is:

Transgression and transformation: (re)bordering education in times of conflict & crises

Education systems ricochet from one global crisis to the next with increasing frequency, with each one impacting in different ways and disgorging new challenges. The years 2023-2024 may well be remembered as a time of unparalleled and intersecting global conflict and crises. According to the latest (GRFC), 258 million people faced acute hunger in 58 countries, while fifty million people in 46 countries were on the brink of starvation at the start of 2023 alone. Already undergoing severe economic crises, many of these countries are locked into cycles of inflation and currency depreciation, with IMF-mandated as a condition of accessing emergency loans, substantially cutting spending on education and healthcare. Created through inequitable neocolonial policies, poor distribution of global and regional food and goods and lack of action on the root causes of climate change, these ‘crises’ are disproportionately borne by the people in and from the Global South, especially poor women and girls.

In 2023, approximately 117 million people, more than half of them children, were forcibly displaced or stateless, more than double the number of a decade ago (UNHCR 2023). As we near climate tipping points and increasing environmental injustices, the capacity to respond and adapt to climate shocks decreases. This climate fragility is a key driver of displacement and of conflict, which in turn exacerbates the underlying socio-ecological crises. We are living through a period of intense production and reproduction of borders: the closing down of national borders and violent push backs of the uninvited; the outsourcing of bordering from territorial to institutions and local communities through micro-level bordering practices gives rise to profound concerns of access to equitable and socially just education for displaced populations. Often presented as racially ‘neutral’, these borders give rise to racialized mobility, immobility, inclusion, and exclusion which have their roots in the .

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2024 will engage with these global developments and crises with the aim of fostering dialogue across borders in a variety of understandings: disciplinary, theoretical, methodological, pedagogical, international, South-North as well as geographical, planetary and political. We invite engagement on how these various crises are shaping and transforming the work of educators and stakeholders, and the lives of those we work with and query whether and how our own work in international and comparative education might reinforce borders. We also look to where and what are the spaces for transgression which resist or challenge increasingly hegemonic knowledge systems and power structures in education. This calls for a radical reimagining and rehumanising of the work of education, one that goes beyond rhetoric and towards a radical re-bordering of education.

The Conference Committee will be made up of the co-chairs Professors Linda Morrice, Máiréad Dunne and Jo Westbrook, the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Vice Chair Dr Alison Buckler, a conference manager, and up to 15 sub-theme co-convenors.

Conference Sub-themes

The conference will have five sub-themes. Each sub-theme will be led by three co-convenors: one from the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Executive Committee, one from CIE, and one from the wider ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ community (an academic, doctoral scholar or practitioner from an external organisation or institution, or an independent researcher active in the field of international and comparative education). The sub-themes are:

Just learning: teachers, curriculum, pedagogies and literacies

This sub-theme explores the intersections between curriculum, pedagogy and teacher development and practices with the cultural, political, economic, social, material and ecological factors that shape opportunities and constraints. In this we recognise how issues, such as those around gender, poverty, language, disability, conflict, geographical location and climate injustices, intersect and result in educational marginalisation over generations. We seek out instances of just researching where such disadvantages are challenged and overturned by policies, practices and the implications for transformative education in the Global South and North.

Global education policy and the politics of governance

This research sub-theme invites contributions that critically engage with the global education policy agendas, including, but not limited to, questions of power asymmetries in governance, planning, finance and accountability of education systems. We invite contributions which engage with the tensions, disjuncture, and resistance to the imperatives of global education policy discourses both historically and in relation to globalisation, knowledge transfer, post-pandemic crises and contemporary precarities. This understanding carries implications for sustainable policy and practice in developing contexts, relates to the recognition of historically marginalised groups, and offers links with the call to decolonise international education and development.

Coloniality and education: gender, race and difference

This research sub-theme invites submissions which explore the intersections of education, society and citizenship, addressing the histories and social geographies of a global post-colonial landscape. In particular, it examines the work of education in producing identities and difference through the multiple intersections of gender and sexuality; race and ethnicity; nationality, religion and citizenship; migration and displacement; youth, age and generation; work and employment; socio-economic status, class and caste.

Education, conflict and displacement within and across borders

This sub-theme invites contributions which explore the complex relationship between education, conflict and mass displacement within and across borders. Questions of relevance include what role education systems and actors can play in contributing to both war and peace, and how state, non-state, national and international institutions can contribute to educational provisions in contexts of conflict and protracted crisis as well as to long-term, sustainable peacebuilding and social transformation, before, during and after violent conflict. With record numbers of forcibly displaced people globally, we also invite contributions which examine the challenges of ensuring access, quality and continuity of education which enable refugees and internally displaced persons to flourish in and through education and navigate pathways to sustainable livelihoods in contexts of liminality and precarity. We welcome contributions which address issues of, but not limited to, policies, curriculum, pedagogy, teacher development, learner experiences, accreditation of learning and politics of educational financing in refugee hosting settings both in the Global South and Global North. We also encourage papers reflecting theoretically on the relationship between education, conflict, war and peace at a time of increased tension, polarisation, authoritarianism and violence around the world.

Borderless theme

We recognise that academic conferences themselves represent, reproduce and reify bordered spaces, both practically in terms of who can attend and who feels welcome, and intellectually in terms of what and whose knowledge is included, endorsed and validated. For ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2024, we intend to incorporate a borderless theme which will be shaped by the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ community, not the conference committee. This goes beyond an ‘open theme’: it will not be a collection of papers that do not quite fit with the other sub-themes, rather an opportunity to build a grounded set of connected ideas into a purposeful agenda that will complement (but may also challenge) the parallel sub-themes. We welcome contributions that centre a concept of (re)bordering education, but sit (fully or partially) outside of the themes above, or intersect multiple themes.

Role of Co-convenors

The role of the Co-convenors will include:

  • Contributing to the overall conference strategy through email and regular attendance at conference planning meetings. Meetings will be primarily online. Please note that the inaugural conference committee will be on Monday 18 Dec, 1-2pm by zoom – please pencil this date in as we would like as many committee members to attend as possible.
  • To work with their sub-theme team to develop the narrative for the sub-theme which will establish the criteria for abstracts submitted under that sub-theme.
  • To review submitted abstracts for their sub-theme.
  • To organise sessions for their sub-theme in consultation with the conference committee to ensure a coherent programme, including identifying and contacting chairs and contributors for sessions.
  • To oversee the smooth running of conference sessions within their sub-theme
  • To contribute to a conference committee working group (e.g. keynote team, inclusion, ECR, comms and publicity, etc)
  • To contribute a short blog piece for the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ blog on a key idea from within their sub-theme. This will be used to promote the conference.

In recognition of the time and effort required in the role of co-convenor, ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ will cover the full cost of conference attendance including three days of registration, accommodation and subsistence, and standard class travel from within the UK.

How to Apply

We invite expressions of interest (EOI) for this role from colleagues working in the field of international and comparative education. Applicants must be a member of ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½, or willing to join the association if invited onto the conference committee. Please send a summary CV (two page maximum) and a short note (maximum 500 words) outlining your interest, expertise, and the sub-theme you would like to be considered for.

Please send your EOI to the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Executive Secretary, Dr Jennifer Agbaire ku.ca.eciabobfsctd-8a476f@yraterces by midnight on Friday 1st of December 2023 (extended).

Since then, an opportunity has arisen to use campus accommodation, if we change the dates to 3-5 September. Using campus accommodation will save delegates approximately 40% on accommodation costs and reduce our overheads. It will also mean delegates are staying close to the venue, rather than travelling from Brighton each day. While changing the dates has not been an easy decision, we saw it as an important opportunity to act on our commitment to making our events as inclusive as possible. We are therefore delighted to re-announce ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2024 for 3-5 September 2024. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2022 will be held in Edinburgh between 13th – 15th September 2022. The overarching theme of the conference is: Partnerships in education: collaboration, co-operation and co-optation

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2022 will critically consider the changing relationships around how education is conceptualised, planned, implemented, provided, resisted, researched, and communicated in various contexts. While recognising the potential value of collaboration, we intend to challenge the normative, aspirational pursuit of partnership.

There are six sub-themes:

  • Global/local (dis)connections in education partnerships
  • Experiencing education partnerships
  • Technology and education partnerships
  • Partnerships in education financing
  • Partnerships in conflict contexts
  • Open theme (papers that do not necessarily link to one of the sub-themes but have a clear resonance with the overarching conference theme – please note that this sub-theme will not have co-convenors so please do not apply to co-convene this theme)

Each sub-theme will be led by two co-convenors. One from the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Executive Committee and one from an external organisation or institution, or an independent consultant active in the field of international and comparative education.

The Conference Committee will be made up of the co-chairs, Dr Jingyi Li (University of Edinburgh) and Dr Alison Buckler (The Open University), a conference manager, and up to twelve sub-theme co-convenors.

The role of the Co-convenors will include:

  • Contributing to the overall conference strategy through email and regular attendance at conference planning meetings. Meetings will be primarily online until further notice.
  • To work with the partnering co-convenor and the conference committee to develop a brief narrative for the sub-theme which will establish the criteria for abstracts submitted under that sub-theme.
  • To review submitted abstracts for their sub-theme.
  • To organise sessions for their sub-theme in consultation with the conference committee to ensure a coherent programme, including identifying and contacting chairs and contributors for sessions within their sub-theme.
  • To support contingency planning in the event that the conference will need to move to be fully online as a result of Covid-19.
  • To oversee the smooth running of conference sessions within their sub-theme
  • To contribute a short blog piece for the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ blog on a key idea from within their sub-theme. This will be used to promote the conference.

In recognition of the time and effort required in the role of co-convenor, ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ will cover the full cost of conference attendance including three days of registration, accommodation and subsistence, and standard class travel from within the UK.

We invite expressions of interest in this role from colleagues working in the field of international and comparative education. Applicants must be a member of ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½, or willing to join the association if invited onto the conference committee. Please send a summary CV (maximum two pages) and a short note (maximum one page) outlining your expertise and the sub-theme you would like to be considered for (more information about the sub-themes will be published on the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Conference page on the website). Please email these to the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Secretary, Dr Jennifer Agbaire, ku.ca.eciabobfsctd-3fa5a0@yraterces by Friday 5th November 2021.

Announcing… ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2022 /announcing-baice-2022/ Mon, 27 Sep 2021 13:11:39 +0000 /?p=30289 We are excited to announce that ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2022 will be held at the University of Edinburgh from Tuesday 13th – Thursday 15th September next year.

We are currently planning and hoping for an in-person conference. However, we will also incorporate virtual sessions and events to include those who are not able to travel, and of course we will have a contingency plan to move online if necessary.

The theme of the conference will be Partnerships in education: collaboration, co-operation and co-optation. We invite papers and contributions that critically consider the changing relationships around how education is conceptualised, planned, implemented, provided, resisted, researched and communicated in various contexts. While recognising the potential value of collaboration, we intend to challenge the normative, aspirational pursuit of partnership.

Some of you may remember that this was our tentative theme for ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2020 which we had to cancel because of the pandemic. However, we feel these issues are even more pertinent within the context of Coronavirus which has highlighted global interconnectedness and challenged geopolitics of knowledge and expertise.

We will shortly be putting a call out for applications for up to six colleagues from the international and comparative education community to join our conference committee. This is a really exciting opportunity to contribute to the overall conference strategy, co-lead and shape conference sub-themes and oversee the smooth running of the conference.

The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Exec look forward to welcoming you to our conference next year!

This workshop is an opportunity to think about writing up the data you have or are collecting for publication as a journal article – and is intended particularly for doctoral students or Early Career Researchers who are planning to publish from their doctoral thesis.

The workshop is funded by the British Association of International and Comparative Education and facilitated by Prof Anna Robinson-Pant from the University of East Anglia and Dr. Germ Janmaat, from the UCL Institute of Education and current Compare Editor. Prof. Robinson-Pant was previously editor of ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½â€™s journal, Compare, and in this capacity, launched the Compare writing mentoring programme for new academics, which has been running for over 10 years.

Through comparing published research articles with the theses on which they are based, we will identify how the authors have used their research data in order to:

  • speak to different audiences
  • contribute to academic ‘conversations’
  • meet different journal criteria.

During the workshop we will:

  • look at key features of academic research articles
  • discuss the process of developing a paper or papers, based on your thesis
  • look at the process of submitting a paper to peer -reviewed journals.

The workshop is open to all attending UKFIET conference. Free of charge, but places are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis (for those whose applications meet the criteria). The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Graduate Student Conference 2019

Climbing down to reality: The doctoral fieldwork process, practice and propositions

The Open University, Walton Hall, Stuart Hall Building, Kents Hill, MK7 6AA

Wed, 26 June 2019

The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Graduate Student Conference 2019 invites graduate students to submit abstracts addressing issues related to conducting Comparative and International Education (CIE) research.

The conference seeks to provide a space for doctoral students of CIE to critically examine the concept but more importantly, the practice of fieldwork. The Conference will move beyond a narrow view of fieldwork which synonymises fieldwork with challenges, towards a temporal consideration of fieldwork as a seminal point during the doctoral cycle before and after which certain decisions may be made, reviewed, modified or perhaps more common, unmade.

The Conference aims to:

  • provide a forum for students to reflect upon their pre-fieldwork expectations (and anticipations) and share their post-fieldwork experiences and lessons learned;
  • facilitate productive and critical discussions about issues relating to fieldwork among doctoral students and members of the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Executive Committee;
  • offer a combination of specialist inputs from keynote speakers and opportunities for doctoral students to disseminate their own research;
  • provide participants with a comfortable and supportive environment to receive constructive feedback on their research; and
  • foster research networks which extend beyond students’ own institutions.

The deadline for submissions is June 10, 2019 (Extended)

The PAL Network is a south-south partnership of 14 countries working across three continents to assess the basic reading and numeracy competencies of all children, in their homes, through annual citizen-led assessments.

The aim of the programme is to find out whether all children are acquiring basic skills – the building blocks of future progress in school – in countries where the information would not otherwise be available. Inclusive and equitable data produced by the assessments is used to inform citizen-led action to improve learning.

The PAL Network is inviting current and recently-graduated Master’s and PhD students to submit their empirical work as an entry into the 2019 Student Paper Competition.

Selected authors of the two winning papers will win a fully-funded trip to present their research at the PAL Network biennial conference on 5-6 March 2019 in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Entrants should submit a 500-word abstract and full paper (length 6000 words excluding tables, figures and references). Please include your name, your affiliated university, CLA data used and contact details.

Winners must commit to attend the PAL Network meetings at the conference.

Submissions should be sent to: ku.ca.mac.cudeobfsctd-2e451b@ertneCLAER and gro.krowtenlapobfsctd-39926c@ecnerefnoc, Please use the subject line Student Paper Competition.
