Compare is a leading journal of international and comparative education, publishing eight issues a year of high-quality articles on diverse issues of educational policy and practice around the world. It is the official journal of the British Association of International and Comparative Education (ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½), which works to support activities of research, teaching and collaboration in the field. In order to maintain its significant global standing, one of °ä´Ç³¾±è²¹°ù±ð’s missions is to develop the diversity of its authorship, and support underrepresented groups, in light of the significant inequalities of global academic publishing. For this reason, in 2017 it established an annual Compare Fellowship, to support early career academics from the Global South in disseminating their research and scholarship to a global audience.

The fellowship will run from 1 September 2025 – 31 August 2026 and provides full financial support (including travel, accommodation and subsistence) and guidance from an academic mentor for the following activities:

  • Attending and presenting at the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ conference 2026 (date and venue to be confirmed)
  • Attending the Compare writers’ workshop at the conference (a full-day course for early career researchers)
  • 1 – 2 week stay at an institution in the UK following the conference (to carry out library research, attend academic events, interact with colleagues and develop publication ideas with the guidance of a mentor)

While in their country of origin, the Compare Fellow will be expected to engage in the following activities:

  • Participating in e-mentoring
  • Developing an article for Compare
  • Facilitating the organisation of activities to support academic writing for other academics in their institution/country
  • Participating in Compare as a reviewer

Requirements of applicants

  • To be based currently in a university in a low-income country (according to the World Bank classification [1])
  • To have completed their doctoral degree within the last six years
  • To be teaching or researching in the field of education

Application procedure

All applicants should send the following documents via email to ku.ca.eciabobfsctd-455c9d@erapmoc

  • CV / resume (including qualifications, professional experience and publications)
  • Supporting statement of approximately 1000 words (outlining research interests, publication trajectory to date and future plans, and potential benefits of the fellowship for themselves and their institutions/countries)
  • Abstract for a conference presentation (for ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ 2026) on a research topic of their choice (300 words)

If contact has already been made with a potential institution and mentor in the UK, then candidates should state this; however, it is not essential to have arranged this beforehand as support will be given for this.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 3 June 2025.

Call for Abstracts – Towards Decolonised Futures (Online Conference May 2021) /call-for-abstracts-towards-decolonised-futures-online-conference-may-2021/ Tue, 01 Dec 2020 16:27:18 +0000 /?p=29678 st marys partner logos

The Centre for Research into the Education of Marginalised Children and Young Adults (CREMCYA) and the Bakhita Centre for Research on Slavery, Exploitation and Abuse (BCRSEA) at St Mary’s University present:

Towards decolonised futures: An interdisciplinary conference challenging the politics of knowing and being

27th May 2021, Online (Zoom)

Among scholars, postcolonialism and decolonisation have attracted great interest. From the earlier writings of Fanon and Said, to more recent contributions by scholars such as Quijano, Mignolo or Spivak, academic research has challenged Western dominance over knowledge production and its devaluation of indigenous ways of knowing and being.

This has great relevance for practitioners working in a variety of fields, including education, social work, international development and humanitarian assistance.

This conference aims to further deconstruct and unravel the notion of one universal way of knowing and being, focusing on the different ways of knowing (epistemic plurality) of those who are traditionally silenced and excluded from power – in academic terms often referred to as the ‘sub-altern’ or ‘the historically muted subject of the non-elite’ (Spivak 1999).

We are interested in critical theoretical and/or empirical research that examines how colonial and eurocentric practices and worldviews are reproduced; that decenters the politics of knowing and being; or that explores decolonised futures. We also welcome examples of decolonisation in contemporary practice.

Themes include, but are not limited to, decolonising the curriculum, legacies of slavery, settlerism and colonialism, justice in a postcolonial world, social movements for decolonisation, and the politics of knowledge production.

The conference explicitly welcomes research and good practices from across all disciplines and sectors, encouraging interdisciplinary and nontraditional (presentations of) research and practice.

In brief, we encourage people from all walks of life and identities to submit abstracts, including:

  • Academics from all disciplines
  • Government
  • Practitioners
  • Civil society
  • Global citizens

Call for abstracts

Deadline for submissions: 31st January 2021

Abstracts should be no more than 400 words for papers and alternative formats (800 words for symposia) including references.

Please save your abstract as follows: author’s name_name of the conference (EG: Johnson_DecolonisedFutures), and send it to ku.ca.syramtsobfsctd-22df6e@sneppuk.enil along with a brief biography and your contact details.
