Research writing capacity building 30th January 2016 in Manila, Philippines /research-writing-capacity-building-30th-january-2016-in-manila-philippines/ Sat, 17 Oct 2015 22:49:12 +0000 /?p=2930 Aim of the workshop

This capacity-building workshop is intended to support institutions to develop spaces and opportunities for research writing and publishing within their institutions. The workshop builds on the interest created by our previous writing workshops in Addis Ababa and Mumbai, which targeted individual writers. The key element in this new initiative is the training of ‘writing champions’ who, for a small honorarium, will return to their institutions and set up writing groups, thereby fostering a research writing ‘culture’ in which peer feedback and mentoring will be key elements.

Applicants

We invite applications from previous participants in the Writing for Compare programme or institutions may already have someone who is institutionally well-placed to develop this role.

The workshop

The training will be devised and delivered by Anna Robinson-Pant, Anna Magyar and Nitya Rao, drawing on their collective experience of capacity building, academic literacies and writing development activities. The workshop will be experiential in that the ‘writing champions’ will participate in small writing groups. Some simple tools and techniques for facilitating discussions and giving and receiving peer feedback will be introduced.

The ‘writing champions’ will be supported by the Compare workshop facilitator for one year.

The rationale behind this initiative

The initial impetus for the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½/Compare programme was to address inequalities in academic publishing and participation through increasing individual participation and contribution of writers from under represented countries in the South. The workshops held in the UK only succeeded in drawing in our intended audience to a limited extent, because of economic inequalities. In our 2012 report to ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ we proposed finding ways of running the initial workshops in the South through linking with local institutions. This was achieved in Addis Ababa in 2014 and then in Mumbai in 2015. From the feedback participants gave, it is clear that for individual writers, whether or not they get to the point of submitting a research paper to Compare, and whether or not that paper is then published, the benefits are significant. We now propose expanding these capacity building benefits in a sustainable way by focusing on institutional and not just individual capacity building.

Educational Research Call for Papers for inclusion in 57/1 /educational-research-call-for-papers-for-inclusion-in-571/ Sat, 09 May 2015 08:18:04 +0000 /?p=2768 Special Issue of Educational Research: 2016

International policy borrowing and evidence-based educational policy making: relationships and tensions

Call for Papers: submit by July 1st 2015

ÌýTheme

This special issue will look at how evidence from one jurisdiction or context influences educational policy decision making in another. Policy borrowing (sometimes disparagingly referred to as ‘policy tourism’) is a contentious and difficult area. Much can be learnt from looking at the successes and challenges of education reform in different contexts but it is not always simple to transfer those lessons to new contexts. This issue will investigate how the subtleties of different education systems are understood by policy makers, advisors and academics and how they then apply this knowledge. It will also explore the reasons behind international policy borrowing (both explicit and implicit), the extent to which it is evidence-based, and whether it is used to justify or inform reform.

This call for papers invites reports of original research, critical reviews of recent research and leading-edge discussion articles from colleagues working in the area. Articles must be accessible to the generalist reader and relevant to the journal’s international readership. Contributions from outside the UK are especially welcome. We are particularly interested in articles from a range of contexts and perspectives – international and regional.

Further Details

For more information please see the flyer with submission details and guidance on contributions.

2nd Annual Conference on Multidisciplinary and Comparative Studies at the University of Greenwich /2nd-annual-conference-on-multidisciplinary-and-comparative-studies-at-the-university-of-greenwich/ Sat, 18 Apr 2015 08:00:43 +0000 /?p=2752 For those members with wider interests and connections with Comparative Studies, we kindly draw your attention to this announcement of a conference at the University of Greenwich.

Letter of Invitation

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Department of Lifelong Learning Education at the University of Greenwich, the Division of Health and Well Being of the University Huddersfield, and the Centre for Work-based Learning of Middlesex University, we warmly extend an invitation to you to join us at the second International Conference on Comparative and Multidisciplinary Studies in Social and Human Sciences. The themes of the Conference continue to encourage the exploration of multi-disciplinarity, indicating that we hope to attract a wide range of interesting and provocative presentations covering all aspects and phases of multidisciplinary and comparative studies across disciplines and regions. You are invited to contribute to this by presenting your own paper and research projects.

Last year’s conference was a huge success and validated our belief that conferences are more fruitful if the number of presentations is limited. Our experience last year confirmed that colleagues were better able to engage with the presentations with a lot more time devoted to discussions and indeed, progressing some of the ideas contained in different presentations. We intend to continue with this strategy this year. As such, we are limiting presentations at this conference to 60 and selection will be on a first come first served basis.

As was the case last year, the conference will be hosted in the idyllic setting of the Maritime Campus of the University of Greenwich, a UN World Heritage Site. In close proximity to the conference venue are excellent hotels and various historical attractions. Please try and join us – and, if I can impose on you further, please forward this invitation to your friends, colleagues and students who may be interested.

All the details are available through the links below.

http://conference.ijmcs-journal.org/

I look forward very much to welcoming you in Greenwich, London!
