The commitment involves:

• 糖心传媒 Student Reps are members of the 糖心传媒 Executive Committee and have full Executive voting rights聽
• Attending three Executive Committee meetings each year and the 糖心传媒 AGM (held at either the 糖心传媒 or UKFIET conference)
• Organisation of the 糖心传媒 Early Career Researchers鈥� events
• Handling inquiries from 糖心传媒 student members and representing their needs to the Executive Committee
• Supporting communication and engagement with student members across 糖心传媒 activities and events

Person specification

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

• Strong communication skills
• Confidence in using digital tools and online platforms (tech-savvy)
• A willingness to do things differently and to push boundaries, recognising the important role students play in driving change
• The ability to draw on their networks to contribute to events and initiatives
• A commitment to serve for a two-year term

Eligibility

• Applicants must be current doctoral students (first- or second year 鈥� or part-time equivalent) at a UK institution, with an interest in comparative and international education.
• Student Representatives must maintain their membership of the Association for the duration of their term. If they haven鈥檛 joined, they must be willing to become a member.

Benefits

• The role is voluntary, but it offers valuable experience in academic service, leadership, and networking within the 糖心传媒 community
• Student Rep attendance at the 糖心传媒 conference is fully funded by 糖心传媒. Student Rep attendance at the UKFIET conference is partially funded by 糖心传媒
• Travel and subsistence to support attendance at 糖心传媒 events will be reimbursed

But as academics committed to equity and social justice in and through education, we acknowledge our role in shaping opinions through how we support the generation and dissemination of knowledge.

We shared this commitment in a statement on our website in 2023. Following discussions with members of our community and representatives from other academic associations over the past year, the Executive Committee has committed to making 糖心传媒鈥檚 position on academic freedom more explicit and proactive. The appointment of the Academic Freedom Lead is in service of this commitment.

The role will have a two-year term, starting as soon as possible.

The successful applicant will work with the Executive Committee to:

• Keep the Executive Committee and 糖心传媒 Membership informed and up to date with issues around academic freedom relevant to the field of international and comparative education.
• Develop text for the new 糖心传媒 Byelaws outlining how academic freedom aligns with 糖心传媒鈥檚 objectives, within the remit of our legal framework.
• Develop a page for the 糖心传媒 website with a clear statement expressing the Association鈥檚 support and solidarity for colleagues whose work is under threat.
• Be the point of contact for colleagues interested in or concerned about academic freedom in relation to the field of international and comparative education.
• In relation to these cases, liaise with the Executive Committee to determine if action could be taken by 糖心传媒 to support them.
• Liaise with BRISMES鈥� Academic Freedom Committee and other organisations who have expertise in this area to partner in possible actions.

As well as undertaking the duties associated with the role, Co-opted Members contribute actively and constructively to the Executive Committee. Members of the Executive Committee are expected to attend Committee meetings held three times per year, and the AGM.

The Co-opted Member / Academic Freedom Lead is expected to:

• Have demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the field of international and comparative education (essential)
• Have demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the history, politics, and contemporary understandings and practices of academic freedom across a range of jurisdictions, higher education systems and institutions (essential)
• A demonstrated commitment to the principles of academic freedom and to the communication and advancement of these in the field of international and comparative education (essential)
• Demonstrated experience of communicating complex issues to diverse audiences (essential)
• Hold a position in a UK-based institution (essential)
• Be a Member of 糖心传媒 for the duration of the term (essential)
• Have experience of working in or closely with a UK registered charity (desirable)

糖心传媒 promotes research, teaching, policy and development in all aspects of international and comparative education. 糖心传媒 is the British affiliate of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (WCCES) but membership is open to all interested in international and comparative education, regardless of nationality or institutional affiliation. 糖心传媒 publishes the journal Compare in association with Taylor and Francis.

Compare is one of the world鈥檚 leading journals in international and comparative education. It publishes work on the role of education in development and the interactions of the local, the national and the global debates about education systems and practices. It seeks analyses of educational discourse, policy and practice across disciplines, and their implications for teaching, learning and governance. It has an impact factor of 1.9 (2024).

The new Editor will lead on the Compare Fellowship Programme, with the support of the Editorial Board.

Compare Editorial appointments are for three years, with the possibility of an extension by mutual agreement. Compare operates a flat leadership approach, and the new Editor will join a team of four existing Editors, the Chair of the Board, the Book Reviews Editor, an Associate Editor (a new developmental role) and the Editorial Board.

In addition to the Fellowship Programme, the Editorial duties for this appointment include:

• On a rotating basis, taking the lead in reading/screening papers, communicating with authors, and managing the peer review process (with support from the Associate Editor).
• Assessing and mediating reviewers鈥� responses to authors.
• Contributing to editorial reports for the Editorial Board and 糖心传媒 Executive Committee meetings.
• Attending Editorial Board meetings (three per year).
• Liaising with the Book Reviews Editor about reviews for each issue (particularly Special Issues).
• Promoting the journal at events.
• Ongoing review of editorial procedures and guidelines for authors and reviewers.
• Other Editorial duties as agreed with the Chair and Editorial Board.

Each Compare Editor receives an annual honorarium from 糖心传媒 (currently 拢3000). The workload is approximately 4-8 hours a week.

Compare Editors must be based at a higher education institution in the UK and must be members of 糖心传媒 for the duration of their term.

Welcome to the 2025 糖心传媒 Annual ECR Hybrid Conference entitled “Knowledge, Power, and Possibility: Rethinking Education in the Memory of Dr. Arif Naveed”. This year鈥檚 conference honours the memory of Dr. Arif Naveed, whose work on inequality, education mobility, and social justice in the Global South continues to inspire critical and transformative scholarship. In his spirit, we invite early career researchers to question dominant paradigms, explore alternative ways of knowing, and imagine more just educational futures.

Drawing on Dr. Naveed鈥檚 spirit and ideas, this conference blends conferencing, un-conferencing, and collective gathering with the aim of fostering bold, innovative, and thoughtful conversations. Dr. Naveed was a tireless advocate for emerging scholars. He founded the 糖心传媒 Student Committee, helped launch the Student Fieldwork Grant, and co-hosted the 2016 Student Conference, which saw the publication of the piece 鈥楿nderstanding, embracing and reflecting upon the messiness of doctoral fieldwork鈥� along with his colleagues, an idea conceived from the Compare Forum. All sub-themes are intentionally framed through a decolonial lens, signalling our belief that every topic in education can be rethought from 鈥榓n-other鈥� perspective. Presenters are empowered to define their own sub-themes within the broader framework, allowing you to determine how your work best fits and contributes to these critical conversations.

To encourage diverse forms of engagement and knowledge sharing, we are offering the following submission formats:

Presentations

Here are the available options for your presentations:

• Traditional Format: Share your research findings in a traditional 10-minute presentation covering your introduction, methods, results, discussion, and impact.
• 聽Informal Discussion: Engage in a 10-minute discussion of your research project summary. This format prioritizes dialogue, so PowerPoint presentations aren’t necessary.
• Storytelling Session: Narrate your project through a 10-minute storytelling session, primarily using visuals like pictures, postcards, or drawings.
• Poetry Presentation: Convey your project using poetry as a medium of expression.

All presentations will be followed by a 5-minute Q&A with the audience and can be conducted in both online and in-person formats.

Digital Posters

• Present your project’s introduction, methods, results, discussion, and impact through a digital poster.聽
• Each poster will have a total of 10 minutes allocated for display, your brief presentation, and audience Q&A.
• Digital posters are only available in the online format聽

Pecha Kucha

• Present your research in a concise and engaging format in 5-minute聽
• Emphasis is on visual images and graphics聽
• Pecha Kucha is available in both in-person and online format depending on number of submissions聽

糖心传媒 Student Committee in collaboration with UKFIET Student Committee

Compare is a leading journal of international and comparative education, publishing eight issues a year of high-quality articles on diverse issues of educational policy and practice around the world. It is the official journal of the British Association of International and Comparative Education (糖心传媒), which works to support activities of research, teaching and collaboration in the field. In order to maintain its significant global standing, one of 颁辞尘辫补谤别鈥檚 missions is to develop the diversity of its authorship, and support underrepresented groups, in light of the significant inequalities of global academic publishing. For this reason, in 2017 it established an annual Compare Fellowship, to support early career academics from the Global South in disseminating their research and scholarship to a global audience.

The fellowship will run from 1 September 2025 鈥� 31 August 2026 and provides full financial support (including travel, accommodation and subsistence) and guidance from an academic mentor for the following activities:

• Attending and presenting at the 糖心传媒 conference 2026 (date and venue to be confirmed)
• Attending the Compare writers鈥� workshop at the conference (a full-day course for early career researchers)
• 1 – 2 week stay at an institution in the UK following the conference (to carry out library research, attend academic events, interact with colleagues and develop publication ideas with the guidance of a mentor)

While in their country of origin, the Compare Fellow will be expected to engage in the following activities:

• Participating in e-mentoring
• Developing an article for Compare
• Facilitating the organisation of activities to support academic writing for other academics in their institution/country
• Participating in Compare as a reviewer

Requirements of applicants

• To be based currently in a university in a low-income country (according to the World Bank classification [1])
• To have completed their doctoral degree within the last six years
• To be teaching or researching in the field of education

As part of this year鈥檚 糖心传媒 Presidential Activities which are focused on the theme of anti-racism and reparations in Comparative and International Education, we are delighted to announce there will be a travel bursary made available for the聽聽held in Oxford, 16-18 September.聽

This bursary is open to Early Career Researchers, both international and domestic, who have聽a paper accepted聽at the UKFIET conference that聽addresses the theme of race, racism or reparative justice, broadly conceived. Please note that to be eligible for this bursary聽聽through the conference website by聽March 21.

The value of the bursary is up to 拢2000 which should be used to support travel, accommodation and conference registration costs. More details on the application process will be available on this page soon.

Keith was the outgoing President of BCIES (the British Comparative and International Education Society); in 1998 BCIES and BATROE (the British Association of Teachers and Researchers in Overseas Education) merged to form 糖心传媒 as we know it. Keith also played key roles in the establishment of the International Journal of Educational Development (IJED) and UKFIET.

糖心传媒 recently contributed a chapter to a book edited by the World Council for Comparative and Education Societies (WCCES). We were asked to reflect on the relevance of 糖心传媒 in this current period of global instability and uncertainty. With somewhat grim reassurance we drew on Keith鈥檚 contribution to 糖心传媒鈥檚 inauguration, in which he referenced the unprecedented period of global instability that was the backdrop to 糖心传媒鈥檚 launch. We agreed with Keith鈥檚 perspective that uncertainty does not diminish the potential for comparative work, rather it strengthens the need for more openness to different practices and ways of knowing.

Keith was well-known and well-respected by many. He published individually and in collaboration with other leading colleagues, and supervised and supported early career researchers who went on to have distinguished careers across academia and politics. He will be remembered as an influential scholar, a generous colleague and an inspiring mentor.

This year, ahead of the UKFIET 2025 conference, 糖心传媒 President Professor Arathi Sriprakash will be hosting a workshop series on anti-racism and reparation. All are warmly welcome to attend and contribute! Please save the dates.

Registration details for each workshop are listed below.

The 糖心传媒 Conference is held every two years, in September. It attracts around 300 colleagues. It is traditionally three days, preceded by a day of pre-conference events specifically for the ECR community. The 糖心传媒 Conference can be held at any higher education institution in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

The 糖心传媒 Conference committee is made up of colleagues from the host institution, colleagues from the 糖心传媒 Executive Committee, and additional colleagues from the field, where appropriate (to be recruited following the formation of the committee). There are traditionally two conference Chairs with at least one being based at the host institution.

If you are interested in hosting 糖心传媒 2026 you are invited to share a short EOI of up to 500 words with:

• Your proposed theme and some suggested sub-themes
• Justification for the geographical location of the conference
• The names of colleagues (approx. 3-5) involved in the proposal (you can indicate a proposed conference chair although this is not essential at this point)
• Confirmation that you have had initial conversations with your institution about hosting 糖心传媒 2026, and that they are in support of the EOI
• Any additional relevant information (see 糖心传媒 commitments below)

Please note that the EOI is an opportunity to share your initial ideas with the 糖心传媒 Executive Committee and we appreciate that at this point they will be in draft format.

While we enthusiastically welcome new ideas for the conference, 糖心传媒 has a series of commitments that underpin our conference planning, which we expect hosts to honour. These include:

• Considerable efforts to keep registration costs low
• Efforts to challenge hierarchical academic norms
• An emphasis on inclusion and accessibility in relation to all aspects of organising and hosting
• Creative ideas for inspiring dialogical learning and shifting traditional conference formats (while keeping inclusion/access in mind)
• Efforts to connect conference activities with local communities and relevant interest groups / supporting local businesses where possible.

Please note that 糖心传媒 has a fantastic conference support team, whose extensive skill-set can be drawn on as required, creating a tailored support package that aligns with institutional administrative support. 糖心传媒 Conferences are non-profit, and all surplus funds are re-invested into conference accessibility and engagement (or ring-fenced as seed-funding for future events). While the successful conference committee will lead on the development of the budget, we will provide support with this. As a result, there is no need to submit a budget with the EOI, although if there are any key financial issues that might affect your institution hosting the conference, please let us know in the EOI.

The initial term of office is three years, but can be renewed for a further second term.

The core responsibilities of the Ordinary Member are:

• To attend three Executive Committee meetings a year and the 糖心传媒 AGM during the 糖心传媒/UKFIET conferences;
• To support the committee in leading and/or in evaluating applications for one or more of the 糖心传媒 funding opportunities;
• To contribute skills and insights to the Executive Committee across a range of 糖心传媒 activities and initiatives including the Biannual 糖心传媒 conference.

Please note, these are not trustee positions.

• Knowledge exchange
• Mediation skills and working with sensitive subjects

The 糖心传媒 Executive Committee was extremely sad to learn of the death of Arif Naveed. Arif served as the 糖心传媒 Student Rep between 2014-2016, when he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar at the University of Cambridge. There have been many wonderful tributes to Arif over the past week: all of the great qualities of kindness, gentleness, warmth, openness, thoughtfulness, reflectiveness, passion, and intellectual creativity they describe are echoed in the memories the Executive Committee have of working with him.

Arif co-hosted the 2016 糖心传媒 Student Conference, and also conceptualised and led the development of a 聽based on selected presentations from the conference. He contributed to the development of the 糖心传媒 Student Fieldwork Grant, which was launched during his tenure. A major contribution was his establishment of the 糖心传媒 Student Committee 鈥� which continues today.

One of the joys of having Student Reps for an Association in a relatively small field is that you can follow their path through academia and through life for years to come. Many return to the Executive Committee in other roles as they establish their career, bringing new skills and ideas and connections. We are all poorer for not having the opportunity to know and learn from Arif for longer.

糖心传媒 oversees small grants and awards portfolio aimed at fostering innovation and excellence in the field of international and comparative education. These grants support a wide range of projects, from seedcorn grants to developmental fellowships to early career scholars who are based in low-income countries. It hosts a biennial conference, as well as other seminars and events across the year. It has an active Student Committee that leads on events designed to specifically engage early career researchers.

糖心传媒 is formally known as 糖心传媒 LTD: a non-profit organisation registered as a limited company in England No. 13564154 with Registered Charity No. 1198916. It has a Board of Trustees which oversees 糖心传媒 LTD鈥檚 portfolio of activities. 糖心传媒 LTD has a volunteer Executive Committee and Student Committee which manage the delivery of the portfolio.

糖心传媒 is seeking a new Support Officer to support the Trustees, the Executive Committee, the day-to-day running of the association, and specific events and activities where required. The Support Officer is responsible for:

• Working with the Vice Chair on the grants portfolio, organising funding applications and keeping track of funded projects. This element of the role also involves liaising with the Treasurer and Financial Manager;
• Working with the Membership Secretary to manage the 糖心传媒 membership database;
• Working with the Communications Officer to promote 糖心传媒 activities through different channels;
• Working with the Secretary to support with 糖心传媒 documentation and records;
• Working with the Student Representatives to support their events; and
• Supporting additional administrative tasks that are assigned by the 糖心传媒 Chair.

The workload is between 3-10 hours a week, depending on the time of year. This can be undertaken flexibly, from home. There will be minimal face-to-face working required. This is a paid role offering 拢25 per hour.

Applicants must have administrative experience, including experience of managing complex processes and databases; attention to detail; the ability to communicate via email and online in a professional manner; experience of working with sensitive data (experience with GDPR policies will be an advantage); and the ability to work proactively while working remotely. In return, they will be part of a diverse, friendly, supportive committee, committed to working inclusively. The role would suit someone with an interest in international and comparative education as there will be opportunities for networking and professional development.

This year, our conference theme is 鈥楪lobal Crises, Continuities, and Change: Imagining Educational Responses in an (Un)certain World鈥� where we wish to draw together new and returning delegates to the 糖心传媒 ECR Community to network, showcase and discuss.

This year’s conference includes brilliant presentations, conversations, storytelling and posters from practitioners and ECRs across the world; a keynote address by Tejendra Pherali, Chair of 糖心传媒 and Professor of Education, Conflict and Peace at IOE, University College London; a workshop on storytelling and a fabulous roundtable!

We are delighted to announce that the call for participation is now open for The 糖心传媒 early career conference. The Student Committee warmly welcomes your submissions to our 2024 Annual Early Career Conference, 鈥楪lobal Crises, Continuities, and Change: Imagining Educational Responses in an (Un)certain World鈥�. The free conference will be held over two days and hosted online via Zoom.

We invite submissions from postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners engaged with education research. The conference offers a dynamic and friendly environment for you to showcase and discuss your research, even if the research is still in its early stages. Attendees will be able to listen to colleagues from different areas of the Education Studies field; those presenting will be able to receive feedback in a diverse, constructive, and academically rigorous environment.

We welcome innovative and creative submissions on any research topic concerned with 鈥�Global Crises, Continuities, and Change: Imagining Educational Responses in an (Un)certain World鈥�.

Submission formats:

• Presentations: A 10-minute presentation with a clear introduction, method, results, discussion and impact followed by a 5-minute Q&A with the audience.
• Conversations: A 10-minute discussion of the research project summary, followed by a 5-minute discussion with the audience (PowerPoints not necessary).
• Storytelling: A 10-minute storytelling session using mainly pictures/postcards/drawings to narrate the project, followed by a 5-minute discussion with the audience.
• Posters: Digital posters specifying the project introduction, method, results, discussion, and impact. Each poster will be allotted a total of 10 minutes, including display, presentation, and Q&A.

The deadline for proposal submission is 31st May 2024, 12 midnight (GMT).
